
Orange County restaurants and food businesses were scoring high in the last part of July with all but two earning ‘A’s. Health Inspector James Scales went to 17 food businesses and gave three perfect scores. The lowest score was an 82 and went to the Honey Stop convenience store, 1012 West Park Avenue in Orange. Demerits included heavy mold and slime inside the ice machine.
The scores of 100 went to Fastbreak store on North Main Street in Vidor, Econolodge Inn and Suites in Bridge City and Taco Bell on North Main Street in Vidor.
Scales also made a pre-opening inspection with no score for a new day care, Little Pirate Learning Center on South Main Street in Vidor.
Other scores and demerits are:
CVS Pharmacy, 1295 North Main Street in Vidor: 99. Shelves and the area under the milk and eggs needed to be cleaned of old foods.
LaQuinta Inn and Suites, 108 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Foods were stored on the floor in the pantry.
Pizza Hut, 1720 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 98. The Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease. Floors needed to be cleaned. The air-conditioner was backed up and dripping onto the front county. Several areas had damaged ceiling tile with black mold on them. Areas had baseboards missing.
Joann’s Family Kitchen, 1111 Green Avenue in Orange: 98. Employee drinks were on the county without a lid and straw. Stove needed to be cleaned of old food build-up.
Quizno’s Subs, 176 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 97. Hair restraints were needed. Air filters were stored improperly on storage shelves. Damaged floor tiles needed to be repaired.
Subway, 2809 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 96. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Slight mold found inside ice machine. Baseboard near the three-compartment since was coming off the wall.
McDonald’s, 755 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Eggs were not at proper temperature. Floor grout was missing. A damaged wall inside the back storage area needed to be repaired.
DuPont Cafeteria/CBS Catering, 2739 FM 1006 in Orange: 95. White gravy was at an unsafe temperature. Management pulled it immediately. Storage shelves and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors, especially under equipment and corners, needed to be cleaned. Floor tiles were damaged. Air-conditioner was dripping into the service sink.
Sonic, 11786 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 95. Foods inside the reach-in cooler and freezer needed to be covered. Area around fryers, storage shelves, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Storage racks inside the reach-in cooler and freezer were rusted. Several broken tiles were in the kitchen area. Inspector recommended a follow-up visit for cleaning the restaurant.
Dollar General, 3024 North 16th Street in Orange: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Lots of spider webs were found along walls. A dead mouse was found inside a trap in the back storage area. Food was stored on the floor throughout the store. Health laws require food to be six inches off the floor. Storage racks and the inside of the reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods. The back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Dumpster area needed to be cleaned of old trash and an old mattress. Ceiling tiles were damaged and needed to be repaired.
Spanky’s Bar and Grill, 1703 North 16th Street in Orange: 93. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Insulation was exposed on doors of reach-in cooler. Employee foods and drinks were stored improperly inside the reach-in cooler. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector recommended more cleaning behind equipment and out the back-door area of the restaurant.
Novrozky’s Restaurant, 501 North 16th Street in Orange: 87. Raw onions were stored next to raw beef. Pipes at the three-compartment sink were dripping and needed repairs. Dates were needed on products. Gasket was coming off the walk-in freezer. Rusted storage shelves were holding clean dishes. Inspector found gnats throughout the restaurant. Area around the fryers and flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Floors needed to be cleaned. Damaged ceiling tiles were in the dining room. Ceiling inside back storage area was damaged or missing.
Honey Stop, 1012 West Park Avenue in Orange: 82. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Heavy mold and slime were found inside ice machine. Dates were needed on some products. Restroom did not have hot water or paper towels. Gaskets on reach-in cooler doors were damaged. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler, not six inches above the ground. Shelves throughout store needed to be cleaned. Damaged storage cabinets needed to be repaired. Floors and walls throughout store needed to be cleaned of dirt and trash. Outside dumpster area needed to be cleaned. Inspector recommended restrooms be cleaned daily.
