President Donald Trump issued a national disaster declaration concerning the coronavirus. The three local county judges met Friday to consider issuing a disaster declaration for this area.
County Judges John Gothia of Orange, Brannick of Jefferson, and McDaniel of Hardin discussed the prospects of making the declaration. Orange County Emergency Management Coordinator Joel Ardoin said Judge Brannick decided to make that declaration for Jefferson County because the Southeast Texas State Fair is scheduled to come to Beaumont in the near future.
The disaster declaration, according to Ardoin, would allow the judge to take certain actions under the emergency management plan with the state fair.
“We don’t have any big events in Orange County anytime soon, nor does Hardin County. Because we don’t have any positive cases in the Golden Triangle area, Orange and Hardin are not going to declare at the point,” Ardoin said.
Ardoin said that would change if a positive test is returned in any of the local counties. The counties and specifically Orange County are going to maintain the status quo. County officials will continue to monitor the situation.
