
Moldy cheese, mold in ice machines, gnats, and spider webs contributed to demerits in food business health inspections at the end of March.
Homsi’s on Interstate 10 East in Orange had a 79, the lowest score Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave after going to 40 businesses during the last half of the month. Ming Buffet in Vidor had the second lowest with an 80.
Six businesses had perfect scores of 100. They were Taco Bell in Bridge City, Texas Avenue Tavern in Bridge City, Family Dollar on Highway 62 North in Mauriceville, Circle K at 7253 Interstate 10 East in Orange, Crawfish Capitol Sales in Mauriceville, and KidzWorld Learning Center in Bridge City.
Scales also made four pre-opening inspections with no scores. They were Reel Cajun Orange at 2900 Sunset Drive in Orange, Yum Yum Getcha Some at 2750 Highway 12 in Vidor, El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant on Highway 12 in Mauriceville, and Granny’s Cajun Boudain on Waddell Street in Vidor.

Ice had built up inside the walk-in freezer because of the motor. Chemical test strips were needed. Soap and towels were needed at the hand-washing station. Gnats were found throughout the restaurant. Employees needed hair restraints. Employee drink did not have a lid and straw. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Vents at Vent-a-Hood and storage shelves, along with equipment, needed to be cleaned of old foods. Ceiling tiles were damaged.

Paper towels were needed at the hand-washing staiton. Employee drinks were stroed improperly on storage shelves. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Shrimp were defrosting inside a sink. Vent-a-Hood area needed to be cleaned of old grease. Back storabe room needed to be cleaned and organized. Standing water was inside the reach-in cooler. No one had food handler certificates.
The Donut Palace, 11258 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 82. Eggs, sausage and boudin were not at proper safe temperatures. No record was kept of time that eggs, sausage, and boudin and been out at room temperature. Molded cheese was in a container in the cooler. Hand sink did not have hot water. Dates were needed on products. Fly traps were used improperly. Employee drinks did not have lids and straws. Vents at Vent-a-Hood, along with storage shelves, equipment, floors, walls, and ceiling needed to be cleaned. Heavy mold was on the walls at the three-compartment sink. Ceiling tiles were damaged.
Mongolian Grill and Sushi, 3104 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 82. Rice was cooling on top of storage container. Foods needed to be covered and dated. Mold was inside ice machine. Ice scopp was on top of hand tools on top of ice machine. No food handler certificates. Employee food and drinks were stored improperly. Buckets of sauce were stored on the floor. Storage shelves, inside of reach-in coolers, floors, and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods. Molded ceilings were in the back storage room Area outside back door needed to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted.
Novrozsky’s, 1035 North Main Street in Vidor: 84. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Sllime was inside ice machine. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Chemicals were stored on top of prep table. Door to walk-in freezer was not closing completely. Freezer had ice build-up on motor. Wiping cloths were stored on top of prep table. Entire Vent-a-Hood system, outside of storage shevles and equipment, along with floors, walls, ceilings and air vents needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Inspector said all surfaces needed to be cleaned and sanitized.
Burger King, 605 North Main Street in Vidor: 85. Containers of eggs were not at proper temperatures. No one had food handler certificates. Mop sink and ice machine had plumbing problems. Buckets of pickets were stored on the floor in bacck storage room. Storage shelves and equipment, along with floors, walls, and air vents needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Certified food manager certificates were not posted in front of store. Inspector said “lots of cleaning” was needed.
Bobcat Chevron, 6212 FM 1442 in Orangefield: 86. Inspector pulled severl expired foods from shelves. Ice scoop was on top of prep table. No one had food manager certificates. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Employee was wearing improper jewelry and an employee was chewing gum while cooking. Drinks were stored on the floor. Ceiling tiles missing. Current health inspection report was not posted in front. Hand-washing signs were not posted at hand-washing station.
McDonald’s, 1710 North 16th Street in Orange: 86. Time records were not kept for holding foods at room temperatures. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be clovered and dated. Door to walk-in freezer did not close completely. Employee had nose ring. Utensils needed to be stored handle up at cappuccino machine. Outside of equipment areas around fryers, grill, floors, walls, and air vent returns needed to be cleaned of old foods and greast. Inspector said “lots of cleaning is needed” at the location.
