Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 37 restaurants and food businesses during the last two weeks of April and found numerous problems including roaches, spider webs, and mold in ice machines.
Only two businesses, Walgreen’s on North Main Street in Vidor, and Crawfish Capitol Sales in Mauriceville, had perfect 100 score.
Two places, Dickey’s Barbecue off Interstate 10 in Orange, plus Bridge City Food Mart on West Roundbunch Road, tied with 77 for the lowest scores. Other low scores were a 79 for Tacos el Primo off Interstate 10 in Orange, and an 83 for the Vidor Casa Ole.
Scales made three pre-opening inspections with no scores. Those were for The Crawfish Hole 2 Geaux on West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City, Wing Junkies on Simmons Drive in Orange, and On The Road on Highway 12 in Mauriceville.

Bridge City Food Mart, 1000 West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 77. Beans were cooling improperly on prep table. Raw shelled eggs were not at safe temperature. Ice scoop was in plastic crate. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Hair restraints needed. Drinks were stored on the floor. Cleaning needed on outside of equipment, floors, walk-in cooler, and storage cabinets. Ceiling tiles broken and missing. Floor tiles broken and missing. Slime was in drink dispensers and slush machine. Inspector pulled “lots of” expired foods from shelves. Current health inspection report was not posted in front. Inspector did follow-up inspection to check on cleaning and repairing.
Dickey’s Barbecue, 2327 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 77. Inspector found several issues with handwashing and plumbing. Recommended more handwashing with soap and paper towels. Chemicals were stored improperly on shelf and prep table. Floor drain was clogged and the three-compartment sink. Handwashing station did not have hot water. Spider webs were near pit. Restaurant had lots of gnats throughout. Outside of storage shelves and Vent-a-Hood area needed cleaning. Floors and walls needed cleaning. Certified food manager certificate and current health inspection report were not posted.
Tacos El Primo, 7409 Interstate 10 in Orange: 79. Raw shelled eggs were not at safe temperatures. Heavy black mold was inside ice machine. Cleaned dishes still had old foods on them. Handwashing station did not have hot water. Walk-in cooler was not working and needed immediate repairs. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Inspector saw several live roaches and had pest control immediately called. Employee was talking on cell phone while cooking. Hair restraints needed. Foods were stored on the floor. Meats were defrosting in three-compartment sink. Vent-a-Hood area and outside of equipment needed cleaning. Floors and walls needed cleaning. Floor tiles were broken and missing. Certified food manager certificate was not posted in front.
Casa Ole, 1015 North Main Street in Vidor: 83. Cooled fajita chicken and a bag of cooked rice were not at proper temperatures. Foods inside coolers needed to be covered. Mold was inside ice machine. Dates were needed on products in coolers. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Employee drinks and personal items were stored improperly. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Floors, walls, ceilings, plus air vents and returns needed to be cleaned. Floor tiles were missing or grout was needed.
Lakeview Exxon, 4315 North Main Street in Vidor: 83. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Raw chicken stored improperly inside walk-in cooler. Dates were needed on products. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Gnats were throughout the store. Hair restraints were needed. Drinks were stored on the floor. Used cooking grease was being dumped on the ground outside the back door. Current health inspection report and certified food manager certificates were not posted. No one had food handler certification.
Roberts Meat Market, 3720 West Park Avenue in Pinehurst: 87. Inspector pulled expired products from shelves. Walk-in freezer door had lots of ice build-up. Dates were needed on products. Handwashing sink was filled with dirty dishes. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Foods were stored on the floor in the walk-in freezer. Storage shelves, floors, and walls needed to be cleaned. Ceiling tiles were broken and missing. Inspector recommended lots of cleaning inside the walk-in cooler.
Star Stop, 11384 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Fly traps were hanging from ceiling inside the kitchen and prep areas. Drinks were stored on the floor. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.
Vidor M&L Store, 111 Green Avenue in Orange: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Heavy mold was inside ice machine. Employee restroom needed soap and paper towels. Drinks were stored on the floor. Storage room where three-compartment sink is located needed to be cleaned and organized.
Burger Town, 6223 West Roundbunch Road in Orangefield: 89. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Employee drinks were stored improperly. Inside of coolers and freezers, along with outside of equipment, floors, walls, air returns and Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Area around dumpster and grease trap needed to be cleaned.
Bobcat Chevron, 6312 FM 1442 in Orangefield: 89. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Ice scoop was on top of storage shelves. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Wiping cloths were stored on prep table. Drinks were stored on the floor. Vent-a-Hood area needed to be cleaned.
El Autentico Taco, 2110 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 92. Raw shelled eggs were not at safe temperatures. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Handwashing station needed soap and paper towels. Light shields were needed.
Shipley Donuts, 2913 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 92. Inside of cappuccino machine and slyshy machines needed to be cleaned. Dates needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Same pan liner was used multiple times to back kolaches. Vent-a-Hood area, outside of equipment and floors needed to be cleaned. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized.
Wendy’s, 2205 Highway 62 in McLewis: 93. Mold was on drink dispenser. Floor tiles were damaged. Floors in back storage room needed to be cleaned. Ceiling near walk-in cooler needed to be repaired. Current food service permit and certified food manager certificates were not posted.
Chalkboards Coffee & Cafe, 1055 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Inspector pulled expired yogurt from reach-in coolers. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Hair restraints were needed. Outside of equipment and inside of reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned.
Market Basket, 800 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans. Walls and ceilings inside dairy cooler and meat department needed to be cleaned.
Market Basket Deli, 800 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Hot water in the three-compartment sink did not reach the required 118 degrees. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Vent-a-Hood, outside of equipment, and floors needed to be cleaned.
Brookshire Brothers, 1380 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Slight mold was incide produce ice machine. Inside of walk-in coolers and freezer floors needed cleaning.

Gator Cafe, 407 Green Avenue in Orange: 95. ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Outside and inside of equipment, along with floors, needed to be cleaned.
Whataburger, 1905 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Broken ice scoop was sitting on container of cups. Lots of gnats were throughout restaurant.
Redeemed Coffee Shop, 11261 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 96. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Water was standing on the bottom shelf inside the reach-in cooler.
7-Eleven, 527 Highway 87 South in Orange: 96. Inspector pulled several expired foods. Shelves inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned.
Pizza Hut, 1152 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Rust was on wall near three-compartment sink. Outside of equipment, storage shelves, floors, and walls needed to be cleaned.
Pizza Hut, 535 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Employee foods were stored improperly inside reach-in freezer. Storage shelves and outside walk-in cooler door needed to be cleaned. Air vents were rusted and needed repairs.
Luigi’s Italian Grill, 3105 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 97. Raw chicken was stored improperly inside reach-in coolers.
Healthy Ways Cafe, 160 Vernon Street in Vidor: 97. Dates were needed on products in reach-in cooler. Vent-a-Hood wall near stove needed to be cleaned.
Do You Charcuterie, 160 Vernon Street in Vidor: 98. Dates needed on products inside reach-in cooler.
Tropicana Ice Cream Parlor, 2637 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Dates were needed on products inside coolers.
Walmart Deli, 1350 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Chemicals were stored on top of prep table. Handwashing signs were needed at handwashing station.
Walmart Grocery, 1360 North Main Street in Vidor: 98. Walk-in freezer had ice build-up.
CVS Pharmacy, 485 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Inspector found “lots of spider webs” throughout store. Floors inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned. Back door needed a new seal.
