Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave a lot of A’s to restaurants and food businesses in the last part of June, though only four had perfect scores. Still, one place had pink slime while others had mold in the ice machines and gnats flying around.
The lowest score was an 81 to the Exxon Food Mart and 7120 West Interstate 10 in McLewis. Demerits included mold in the drink dispensers and no handwashing sink in the kitchen.
The perfect scores went to the The Star and Crescent Moon Cafe in Shangri La in Orange, Red Wagon Cafe in Vidor, Loving Start Daycare in Vidor, and Early Leaning Child Care in Vidor.
The scores and demerits are:
Exxon Food Mart, 7120 Interstate 10 in McLewis: 81. Refried beans were not at safe temperatures. Mold was on the drink dispensers and inside the ice machine. Chemicals were stored above bet foods. No one had food handler certificates. Dates were needed on products inside the coolers. Store did not have a handwashing sink in the kitchen (only in restrooms). Foods were stored on the floor inside coolers and freezers. Plumbing at the three-compartment sink was stopped up. CO2 tanks needed to be secured. Light shields were needed. Unused equipment needed to be disposed.
Donut Hole, 1613 16th Street in Orange: 86. Sausage and eggs were not at safe temperatures. Raw dough and ice blocks used for snowcones were stored in plastic grocery bags. Dates were needed on products. Lots of gnats throughout store. Child’s chair was sitting on top of prep table. Same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Vents at Vent-a-Hood, along with outside of all equipment. floors, and walls needed to be cleaned. Handwashing sign needed at handwashing stations.
Mi Casa Mexican Grill, 110 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 88. Foods were cooling inside large containers on top of a table. Mini-pizzas were not at safe temperatures. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Paper towels were needed at the handwashing station. Vent-a-Hood, along with outside of equipment and floors needed to be cleaned. Area outside back door needed to be cleaned. Unused equipment needed to be discarded.
Texas Country Store, 3701 North 16th Street in Orange: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Lots of gnats were in store. Mold and slilme were inside ice machine. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Floors inside walk-in cooler and back storage room needed to be cleaned. Employee restrooms needed to be cleaned and sanitized, and stocked with paper towels. CO2 tanks needed to be secured.
Happy Donuts, 495 South Main Street in Vidor: 90. Sausage and boudain were not at safe temperatures. No record of time was kept on holding sausage and boudain out at room temperature. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Spider webs were throughout the shop.
Sammy’s Stop, 2016 Pine Bark Boulevard in Orange: 91. Inspector pulled several 2018 expired foods from shelves. Pink slime was inside ice machine. Ice scoop was stored on storage shelves next to the ice machine. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Floors inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned.
Waffle House, 4212 27th Street in Orange: 92. Mold was inside ice machine. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Gaskets inside the ice machine and reach-in coolers were damaged. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Vents at Vent-a-Hood and inside reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned.
Stop N Drive, 1801 DuPont Drive in Orange: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Walk-in cooler has water dripping from ceiling. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Back storage rooms needed to be cleaned. Unused equipment needed to be discarded. Paper towels were needed inside employee restroom. CO2 tanks needed to be secured.
Gateway Travel Plaza, 22965 Interstate 10 in Vidor: 92. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. paper towels were needed at the handwashing station. Texas Snostorm, 2202 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 94. Door to the reach-in freezer was damaged and insulation was exposed. Employees needed to wear close-toed shoes and hair restraints. Kroger, 1600 16th Street in Orange: 94. Lots of ice buildup on walls and ceiling inside walk-in freezers. No hot water was inside the meat and produce departments.
