
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales released his scores for July food business inspections. The McDonald’s on 16th Street in Orange had the lowest score with an 81. Scales noted that he saw an employee get something out of her teeth and then try to prepare foods without washing her hands. He also noticed dead crickets by the back door.
The other low scores went to Pine Forest Fuel in Vidor with an 83, and the Donut Palace on Highway 12 in Mauriceville with an 84.

Casa Ole, 1015 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. No hot water in employee restroom. Front cooler was not keeping proper temperatures and needed immediate repairs. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Inspector found several chipped plats. Flies were throughout the restaurant.
Market Basket Deli, 3709 North 16th Street in Orange: 94. Foods were improperly stored inside walk-in coolers like meats above potato salad. Gnats were throughout the store. Boxes of food were stored on the floor. Storage shelves and containers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Food manager certificates have expired.
Market Basket, 3709 North 16th Street in Orange: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from shelves. “Lots of gnats” found on raw onions in the produce department. Meat department was defrosting raw meats improperly inside the sink sitting in cold water. Storage shelves and floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods.
The Donut Palace, 11258 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 84. No record of time found on holding cooked sausage, eggs and boudin. Chemicals were stored next to foods on the storage shelves. Front cooler was holding water. Dates were needed on all products inside the coolers and freezers. Employees were using the same pan lines multiple times for kolaches. Vent-a-Hood, storage shelves and containers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors throughout needed to be cleaned of old foods and dust. Several ceiling tiles were damaged. Hand-washing sign was not posted in front of the hand-washing station. All employees needed to have food handler certificates. Current health inspection report was not posted in front of store. Fire system needed to be inspected.
Dollar General, 2500 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Pinehurst: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from shelves. Shelves inside the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Lit to the toilet inside the ladies’ restroom was missing. Towels were needed inside men’s restroom. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Ceiling in back storage room needed to be repaired because insulation was exposed. Back storage room doors needed to be sealed at bottom.
Smokers Express, 1050 16th Street in Orange: 91. Inspector pulled several expired drinks from shelves. Ice scoop was on top of box next to ice machine. Store name and address are needed on all bags of ice sold. Current health inspection report was not posted in front of the store.

Dates were needed on all products, including sandwiches, inside coolers. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Storage rooms needed to be cleaned and organized. Walmart grocer, 1360 North Main Street in Vidor: 95. Inspector found dented cans throughout the store. Meat department needed to have soap dispensers at the hand-washing station.
Walmart Deli, 1350 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Chemicals were stored on the prep table. Storage shelves were used for storing clean dishes. Boxes of food were stored on the floor inside the walk-in freezer. Vents at the Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old grease build-up. Hand-washing sign needed at all hand-washing stations.
V Smoke and Grocery, 585 North Main Street in Vidor: 92. The reach-in cooler had water dripping from the top when the doors opened or closed. Business did not have food service permit. (Inspector gave 10 days to get permit.) Paper towels were needed inside the employee restroom. Ceiling and floor tiles were missing or damaged in both storage rooms.
Pine Forest Fuel, 4255 North Main Street in Vidor: 83. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Ice scoop was on the floor next to the ice machine. Dish sink did not have sanitizer. Employees needed closed toe shoes and hair restraints. Drinks were stored on floors in cooler and storage room. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old foods. Noah’s Seafood Kitchen, 950 North Main Street in Vidor: 88. Inspector found raw oysters, crawfish tails, and cut raw onions out of proper temperatures. Employee restroom did not have hot water. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Employees needed hair restraints and closed-toe shoes. Fish and shrimp were defrosting inside the three-compartment sink. Jumping Bean, 7174 Highway 87 North in Little Cypress: 97. Raw chicken was stored on the top shelf inside the reach-in cooler.
McDonald’s, 1710 North 16th Street in Orange: 81. No record of time was found on holding foods out of proper temperatures. Mold was on drink dispensers. Inspector said the dispensers needed to be pulled and cleaned daily. Chemical tabs were stored on top of the cappuccino machine. The cooler holding lettuce and onion was holding water. Duct tape was found on the bottom corner. Dates were needed on all products (salads) inside the reach-in coolers. Inspector found at least 20 dead crickets near the back door. Employees needed hair restraints. Employee was getting something out of her teeth and then tried to prepare foods without washing hands. Employee was eating and drinking in the kitchen when inspector arrived. “Lots of dirty” wiping cloths were near the washing machine. Vent-a-Hood, along with reach-in coolers and the outside of most equipment needed to be cleaned of foods and grease. Several of the vents at the Vent-a-Hood are missing and needed to be replaced. Floors, walls, and ceilings throughout the store needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Store had damaged floor tiles, missing floor grouts, and damaged or missing baseboards. Inspector reported “lots of daily cleaning and maintenance is required at this location.”
