Orange County Health Services received notification of the first confirmed case of Pertussis (whooping cough) in Orange County. The health department is working with the patient and their provider to
ensure appropriate treatment and follow up.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It can affect individuals of all ages but poses the greatest risk to infants, young children, and those with compromised immune systems. Early symptoms often mimic a cold, including a runny nose, sneezing, and a mild cough. As the illness progresses, severe coughing fits can lead to difficulty breathing, vomiting, and exhaustion.
