For a short time Tuesday night many in the northern parts of Orange County were able to open their cellphones and capture pictures of a red and purple sky known as Northern Lights.
The fancy definition says Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a natural light display in the Earth’s sky caused by energetic particles from the sun colliding with gases in the atmosphere.
Some forecasters in Texas issued a severe G4 geomagnetic storm watch for Tuesday, Nov. 11 and Wednesday, Nov. 12. So hopefully those of us that missed it may get another shot on Wednesday.
According to Google, a G4, or severe geomagnetic storm is a powerful solar event that can cause widespread issues for power systems, satellites, and radio communications. These storms are rated on a scale of G1 to G5 (minor to extreme) and are caused by large solar eruptions, such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). At the G4 level, problems like voltage control issues on power grids are possible, and spacecraft operations may experience tracking and charging problems. (photo Belinda Childress)
