The Newton school district is closing all schools for the week because an employee has shown signs of having meningitis.
The Newton superintendent said the district had scheduled Thursday and Friday as days off and will now be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, too. He said the district will thoroughly clean and sanitize the schools and will bring in an outside cleaning firm for the elementary school.
The employee has been tested to confirm the disease, but the results are not in.
Meningitis affects the membrane around the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms are flu-like and include sudden fever, headache, stiff neck, sleepiness, and sensitivity to light.
Anyone with the symptoms should go to a doctor. m
