It’s been a busy week across the county, and our jailhouse is full, but still accepting guests.
Thursday evening, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Newton Police Department, responded to 390 County Road 4056 just south of Bleakwood to serve arrest warrants on Garry Lee Scambler II. Scambler was wanted on multiple charges stemming from a foot pursuit earlier in the week.
Sergeant Chad Ainsworth and K-9 Rhino had a busy weekend. Friday evening, the duo arrested William Joseph Cary in Trout Creek for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Later that evening, Sgt. Ainsworth observed a motorcycle traveling northbound on State Highway 87. Just prior to the traffic stop, the operator, Brandal Lugene Burks II, threw counterfeit currency from the motorcycle onto the roadway. Burks was arrested and charged with Forgery and Tampering with evidence.
Later that same night, a traffic stop within the City of Newton resulted in the seizure of nearly one ounce of methamphetamine, marijuana, and a firearm concealed inside an interior vehicle panel. Mark Daniel Swartout was arrested for Man/Del Controlled Substance. Big thanks to everyone that helped!
Saturday night, Sgt. Ainsworth, K-9 Rhino, Deputy Boyette, and I assisted the Kirbyville Police Department with a stolen vehicle pursuit. The passenger fled on foot into the woods with a handgun. After several hours of tracking, the suspect was located and taken into custody without incident.
We answered 53 calls for service last week and currently have 36 inmates in the following jails: 19 in Newton, 12 in Beauregard Parish and 5 in Jasper County. If you need anything from the Sheriff’s Office, don’t hesitate to reach out!
