From Sheriff Colton Havard
Warrant arrest at Deweyville Boat Ramp:
On Saturday, October 4, 2025, at approximately 8:44 a.m., Deputy B. Sonnier was patrolling the area of the Deweyville Boat Ramp. During the course of his patrol, he observed a white male pushing a bicycle. Deputy Sonnier recognized the male as James Robert Peacock (above). A warrant inquiry on Peacock revealed that he had an active warrant out of Newton County for a probation violation (assault causes bodily injury). Peacock was placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail without incident.
Parole Violator Arrested by NCSO:
On Sunday, October 5, 2025, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Deputy B. Sonnier was patrolling the area of Spur 272 and County Road 4141. During the course of his patrol, Deputy Sonnier conducted a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle and recognized one of the passengers to be Mitchell Crooks Jr., who had an active warrant for parole violation issued by Texas Pardon and Parole.
Before Deputy Sonnier was able to place Crooks under arrest, he exited the vehicle and fled on foot, initiating a foot pursuit through the woods. Additional NCSO deputies, along with deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene and assisted in the search. Crooks had a relative who lived nearby, and deputies went to that address, where they observed Crooks running across the yard. He was taken into custody shortly thereafter and transported to the Newton County Jail.
Sheriff Havard would like to extend his appreciation to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
NCSO & TPWD conduct follow-up investigation on CR 3103:
On Sunday, October 5, 2025, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Sheriff Havard, Deputy Brent Sonnier, Sergeant Cagle, and Texas Game Wardens Landon Spacek and Stephen Rhyne, traveled to a residence in the 100 block of County Road 3103 to follow up on an investigation regarding a stolen game camera.
Upon arrival, the deputies and game wardens observed an alligator in a horse trailer, which led to a consensual search of the property. During this search, a white male, Donald Ray Buchanan, was located; he had an active arrest warrant out of Hardin County for failure to appear (POCS PG 1 >1G<4G). Furthermore, the search revealed the stolen game camera along with a 2011 Polaris Sportsman four-wheeler that had been reported stolen.
Buchanan was placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail without incident.
