Sheriff Havard’s Report
Family Violence Arrest in Burkeville:
On Monday, July 21, 2025, Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence off County Road 2116 in Burkeville, in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with witnesses, who stated Billy Olson II, had physically assaulted members of his family during an argument. Deputies ultimately arrested Olson and transported him to the Newton County Jail, where he was charged with Injury to Child/Elderly/Disabled w/ intent to cause bodily injury.
Newton resident Gideon Robinson receives Sheriff’s Citizen Lifesaving award: On July 7, 2025, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to US Hwy 190 at the Newton/Jasper County line for a single-vehicle crash. The crash occurred in Gideon’s yard. Gideon heard the crash and ran to the vehicle, where he noticed that the driver was unconscious. He ran over to his grandmother’s house and directed her to call 911 immediately. While his grandmother was calling 911, Gideon ran back to the vehicle and noticed
two small children in the back seat, which was filling up with smoke. Gideon was able to find a shovel lying in the yard and used it to break out the rear window, eventually rescuing the kids and getting them to safety until first responders arrived on the scene. Gideon is a true hero whom I believe deserves recognition for his heroic actions on July 7, 2025. As I told Gideon, I know many adults who wouldn’t have acted as swiftly as he did. Many thanks, Gideon!
Newton County Deputies locate stolen property from Deweyville Burglary:
On Friday, July 18, 2025, deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an address off County Road 3870 in Deweyville, in reference to a burglary of a habitation. Deputies were able to gather evidence and begin searching for the stolen property and any potential suspects. On Monday, July 21, 2025, deputies traveled to a residence in Bridge City, Texas, where they recovered some of the stolen property and interviewed a possible suspect. While at the residence in Bridge City, deputies observed stolen property inside of a vehicle on the property. Deputies were able to obtain a search warrant and subsequently recovered stolen property from the vehicle. Following the recovery of the property from the vehicle, the investigation led to a pawn shop in Beaumont, Texas, where additional property was recovered. Deputies presented evidence to Newton County Justice of the Peace, Michael Greer, who subsequently issued an arrest warrant on Joseph Daniel Koons, for Burglary of a Habitation. Shortly after the warrant was issued, Koons was arrested by the Bridge City Police Department and transported to the Orange County Jail. We appreciate the assistance from the Bridge City Police Department and the hard work put into this case by Deputy Brent Sonnier and Captain Smith.
