Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle Warrant Arrest in Newton:
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 11:33 p.m., deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, along with a Newton Police Officer, went to 525 County Road 3008 in Newton to attempt to serve a felony arrest warrant on Jacob Paul Wiltz. Upon arrival, deputies were able to place Wiltz into custody without incident and transport him to the Newton County Jail. The arrest warrant stemmed from an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle report in Bon Wier on July 14, 2025. The complainant in this case was able to track the vehicle to a residence in Newton. Deputies recovered the vehicle unoccupied and released it to the owner. Deputies immediately began gathering evidence and presented the evidence to a Newton County Justice of the Peace, who subsequently issued an arrest warrant.
Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animal Arrest:
On Saturday, July 19, 2025, at approximately 10:50 a.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service off Private Road 8057 regarding cruelty to non-livestock animals. Upon arrival, deputies met with a complainant who advised that their dog had been shot on their property by a neighbor. Deputies began an investigation and obtained evidence for an arrest warrant. They then submitted the evidence to a Justice of the Peace, who subsequently issued a warrant for the arrest of Coby Wayne Ellis. At approximately 5:57 p.m, deputies served the arrest warrant on Ellis at his residence and transported him to the Newton County Jail, where he was charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals (third degree felony). Sheriff Havard would like to remind the residents of the county that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. Sheriff Havard would also like to commend all deputies involved for their hard work on this case.
Criminal Mischief to the Old Field County Dump:
On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the County Dump located on County Road 4100, off FM 1416, in reference to criminal mischief. Upon arrival, deputies found that the gate had been run over by someone in a vehicle. If you have any information on this, please contact the Sheriff’s Office. You will remain anonymous.
Calls for Service:
We answered 58 calls for service this past week and booked 6 individuals into the Newton County Jail. We
currently have 25 inmates housed in the following facilities: 5 in Beauregard Parish, 8 in Jasper, and 12 in
Newton.
