Public Intoxication Arrest in Deweyville:
On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 10:54 a.m., deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling County Road 4213 in Deweyville when they conducted a pedestrian stop on a white female, identified as Cori Leigh Cole. While speaking with Cole, deputies observed signs of intoxication. Cole was uncooperative with deputies and told them, “Just take me to jail”. Cole was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Newton County Jail, where she was charged with Public Intoxication.
Lawn Mower Accident in Old Champion:
On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 2:36 p.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call reporting that a woman was trapped under a zero-turn riding lawn mower at a residence in the 1500 block of County Road 3139 in the Gist community. First responders arrived at the scene and located the victim, identified as 51-year-old Rose Ella Proctor, beneath the mower. They quickly removed the lawn mower and began life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Proctor was pronounced deceased at the scene by Newton County Justice of the Peace, Judge Dana Ashmore. A preliminary investigation revealed that Proctor had been mowing her yard when, for unknown reasons, she got off the lawn mower. Deputies discovered that the mower’s safety control switch had been overridden and disconnected, allowing it to continue moving unattended. It is believed the mower then struck and ran over Proctor. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences and prayers to the family during this difficult time.
Assault Family Violence Arrest in Deweyville:
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 12:27 p.m., deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 2100 block of County Road 4191, in the Deweyville community, in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies’ preliminary investigation revealed that Andrew Fenton assaulted his father due to a disagreement over selling property. Deputies placed Andre under arrest and transported him to the Newton County Jail where he was charged with Assault Family Violence.
Public Intoxication Arrest in Trout Creek:
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 11:10 p.m., deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a white male being intoxicated in the parking lot of Dee’s One Stop in the Trout Creek community. Prior to deputies’ arrival, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received another call stating the individual had relocated to a residence in the 19000 block of State Highway 87 and was causing a disturbance. Upon arrival, deputies located the subject, identified as Devin Andrews, from Vidor, Texas. Deputies were able to determine that Andrews was intoxicated and subsequently placed him under arrest for Public Intoxication and transported him to the Newton County Jail.
Calls for Service:
We answered 66 calls for service last week and booked 4 individuals into the Newton County Jail. We currently have 23 inmates housed in the following facilities: 6 in Beauregard Parish, 8 in Jasper, and 9 in Newton.
