Swatting Call Incident:
On Monday, May 26, 2025, at 11:25 p.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an individual stating he had shot his mother and father at an address in the Liberty Community. While deputies were responding, the individual claimed he wanted to negotiate with Sheriff Havard before surrendering. During negotiations, Sheriff Havard noticed inconsistencies in the caller’s story. Deputies, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety, arrived at the residence and made contact with the alleged caller, who was unaware of the alleged incident. Through further investigation, it was determined to be a case of “swatting.”
Swatting is a form of criminal harassment in which a false report is made to law enforcement, prompting a response to a nonexistent emergency. The investigation is ongoing, but it has been determined that the caller was from out of state. We appreciate all involved to ensure the safety of everyone.
