Last Tuesday, I had the opportunity to attend “Sheriff’s Day” at the State Capitol alongside several senators and state representatives. Many important bills are being discussed that could have an impact on Newton County, one of which being Senate Bill 22, which is funding for rural law enforcement agencies. This funding is available at no cost to county residents and allows us to put the money towards deputy and jailer salaries and safety equipment.
This weekend, during the Mud Nationals event at Sabine ATV Park, we received reports that several ATVs had made their way onto county roads and caused damage to private property. We are currently working closely with the park to identify measures that will prevent such incidents from occurring in the future and ensure the safety of both the participants and the community.
We got a call over the weekend from a lady who said her car was struck by a bullet while she was driving down the road. Deputies arrived at the scene, and it was confirmed that her vehicle had indeed been hit by a bullet. We are actively investigating and have a possible suspect in this case. Always be mindful when you are shooting. You never know where the bullet may end up.
We answered 57 calls for service last week and booked 6 individuals into the Newton County Jail. We have 18 inmates housed in the following facilities: 4 in Jasper, 4 in Beauregard Parish, and 10 in Newton County. Thought for the week: Believe you can and you’re halfway there.
