DECEMBER 11 UPDATE ON HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION: As of this date, charges have been filed on one individual involved in the shooting incident that occurred on November 10, 2024, at the Elam Event Center located on U.S. Highway 190 East in Newton Unincorporated City limits. The victim was identified as Jerome Rambo Jr., a Black Male, 16 YOA. On November 27th, 2024, we charged an individual with the following offenses related to the above investigation:
PC 37.09 (c) Tampering/Fabrication Phys Evid W/Intent to Impair F-3
PC 22.05 (a) Deadly Conduct Class A-Misdemeanor
The individual was taken into custody in another state and is pending extradition back to Texas on outstanding warrants. We are still actively working this case and have identified other persons of interest and witnesses. INITIAL RELEASE: On November 10, 2024, at approximately 0355 hours, NCSO Dispatchers received a call regarding an unknown male that had been shot at the Elam Event Center location on U.S. Hwy 190 East in Newton (unincorporated city limits). Deputies arrived on the scene at 0413 hours to investigate. The victim was accessed at the scene by Allegiance EMS personnel and transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital in Jasper. The victim was pronounced dead at 0454 hours.
Calls To Service (December 9, 2024, to December 15, 2024): The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) answered 60 calls to service.
Jail Population: We currently have 16 inmates in the following jails;
8 housed in Newton, 6 housed in Beauregard, and 2 housed in Jasper.
Jail Transports: NCSO had 6 jail transports:
1 from JCSO to NCSO, 1 from NCSO to Halburt Unit, 1 from NCSO to doctor appointment, 3 from NCSO to Beauregard Parish.
