Over 200 volunteers worked to build a new playground at the Mauriceville Elementary School (MVE) on Saturday, December 8. The playground replaces the previous one that was damaged by the flooding during Tropical Storm Harvey.
The volunteers were divided into teams to work on different phases of the playground. Concrete was poured and playground equipment was placed in the concrete. Wood mulch was spread around the equipment to make for a safer surface on which the students can play.
Another team built an Octagon in which students play a ball game. A gravel walking path was laid out going from the back of the school to the new playground. Several benches and picnic tables were constructed by the volunteers.
Work started at about 8:30 AM and was completed in less than six hours including a lunch break. A ribbon cutting ceremony followed at 2:30 PM on Saturday, December 8.
KaBoom a national non-profit group dedicated to bringing balanced and active play for all kids and the Rebuild Texas Fund selected the Mauriceville Elementary School as one of its 15 community designed playground projects. Eight weeks ago, a representive from KaBoom consulted with students and teachers at MVE to receive suggestions what they wanted for their new playground.
