The West Orange-Stark Mustangs beat Waco LaVega on Sept. 13 with 62 points and almost 700 yds. of offense between them and the first thought after the Mustang victory was, “there’s a good chance they could meet again in the playoffs.” Well sports fans, you get your wish.
The two will meet Friday at Bulldog Stadium in Magnolia at 7:30 in the Area Round of the 4A D2 playoffs. They met the first time in Madisonville. The win for WOS was a turning point in the season. Many didn’t think they’d win after how they lost against Nederland the week before. But the impressive victory against the talented Pirates kickstarted a seven game win streak that included a 35-0 win at Silsbee. Speaking of rematches, the winner of Friday’s game will play the winner between Silsbee/Bellville.
LaVega’s (8-3) other two losses this season were to Celina and Stephenville, two teams that both scored 70+ points in their bi-district wins.
Coach Hiawatha Hickman says both teams have gotten better since they played each other in September. “We controlled the ball and controlled the clock the first time around.” And the Mustangs are looking to do the same thing Friday.
Both come in averaging 36 points per game. Bryson Roland (#0) is their offensive stud with 1200 yds. rushing to go along with 22 receptions for 300 yds. and 27 TD’s. Rayquan Kennedy (#18) is also a big rusher averaging eight yards per carry. Kourtney Parr (#12) is a sophomore quarterback who has thrown for 1425 yds. and 13 TD’s with only 3 interceptions. Jabarie Thornton (#1) is his leading target with 58 catches for 1058 yds. and 12 TD’s.
WOS is lead by the sensational QB Marcus Turner who has thrown for 1700 yds. and rushed for 820 yds. RB Khelvy Jefferson has rushed for 1170 and 16 TD’s. Both were instrumental in the win over the Pirates. Turner rushed for 117 and Jefferson had 161 and two scores. Since that first meeting the Mustangs have added an impressive passing game and now have six receivers with double digit receptions, led by big play receiver Ja’Mikael Davis.
It’ll be a cool night in Magnolia but the play on the field oughta be fire when these two meet for the second time with a trip to the third round on the line.
