Down 14-7 at the half to the Robinson Rockets, West Orange-Stark came back in the second half with some good defense and the running of Khelvy Jefferson to take a 35-21 win into the third round.
Like a heavyweight fight both teams sparred in the first quarter with neither throwing a big punch. In the second, WOS struck first on a 44 yd. option pass from Michael Turner to Anterrion Fontenot and a Brian Hernandez kick.
Robinson would respond on the next drive with a 20 yd TD run by their 2000 yd. rusher Evan Moreno to tie.
WOS would make a huge mistake by kneeling the kickoff at the one yard line. A quick three and out gave Robinson the ball in Mustang territory and Moreno would score again to take a 14-7 lead at the half.
WOS would stuff the Rockets on their opening drive in the second half and cause a safety to make it 14-9. Minutes later the defense would bow up again and force a three and out. The Mustangs would take the 15-14 lead on a Dylan Myers 41 yd. TD run and a failed two point attempt.
Just before the end of the third quarter WOS was faced with a fourth and three at the Robinson 27. QB Kwalin Dugas threw a perfect sideline pass to Jyreon Davis for the first down and that was followed by the first of several pinball runs for Jefferson as he scored on the next play from 16. The PAT was missed.
Two possessions later a pass interference call on third down set up WOS at the Robinson 29 and Jefferson made another incredible TD run to go up 28-14.
Robinson would keep it close with a 47 yd bomb caught by Dylan Medlock in between two Mustangs to make it 28-21.
With 3 minutes left Robinson would kick off to Jefferson and he returned it 42 yds. to set up a time consuming drive, ending with another Jefferson TD, this time from 11 yds. to seal the victory 35-21.
Jefferson ended with 153 yds (seemed like more) and three second half TD’s. The junior sets a new season school record with 1776 yds. He’s 223 from breaking the all-time record and six TD’s away from breaking another season record (30).
Dugas also had a nice game offensively 10-15 for 148 yds. and 36 yds. on the ground. Robinson came in averaging more than 400 yds. per game. WOS held them to 298.
WOS (10-2) will play Sealy (11-1) after their 54-7 over Columbia. They’ll play Friday at 7p at Randall Reed in New Caney.
