The WOS Mustangs beat Bellville 24-14 Friday night in New Caney to set up a rematch of last years Region III Final with Silsbee.
Sophomore RB Elijah Gales again set the tone on a windy night at Randall Reed Stadium with 156 yds. on 22 carries and two touchdowns. JaQuailon Chaney also ran hard with 43 yards on just four carries.
QB Jerren Terrell was 10-20 for 114 yds. and a beautiful touchdown throw in the corner of the end zone to Jerrold Brown for the first score.
Gales then carried the ball five straight times in the second quarter, scoring on the fifth time from 7 yds. out to make it 14-0. Then kicker Angel Ibarra would add an exclamation point in the first half with a 43 yd. FG to make it 17-7 at the half.
Gales scored again in the second half to make it 24-7. Bellville added a TD late after a 51 yd run by their super sophomore Richard Reese set up a short score.
Bellville, a team that put up 54 points on Jasper last week, had four of their eight possessions end in a “three and out” series courtesy of the Mustang D. The Brahmas averaged just four yards per play.
The Mustangs dominated statistically but several miscues in all three phases of the game and a player ejection made it hard for Head Coach Cornel Thompson to enjoy the victory.
“We made way too many mistakes,” he said. “And it was on things that we practiced on all week because we knew what we were going to see.”
The WOS (Home) vs. Silsbee Quarterfinal Football game will be played on Friday, December 6th at 7:30pm at BISD Memorial Stadium. All tickets have to be purchased the night of the game at the Gate. Ticket prices are $10. L
