“See you at practice.”
That was the gist of Coach Cornel Thompson’s shortest postgame speech since becoming the West Orange-Stark head coach.
The Nederland Bulldogs came into Mustang country and left with a 19-18 win on opening night of the 2018 season. It’s the first home loss since a 32-31 defeat to Friendswood in 2011.
Both teams played without their stars. Nederland starting quarterback Blaysin Fernandez was not suited out and Mustangs RB/LB two way starter Kavyn Cooper was out with an ankle sprain.
The game was somewhat typical of a first game that coaches dread…too many penalties, too many turnovers.
The Mustangs defense showed up early with back to back touchdowns. Ja’Vonn Ross returned an interception for a touchdown. Then Teshaun Teel picked up a fumble and scored on the next Bulldog possession to take a 12-0 lead after two botched point after attempts.
But the Bulldogs responded with two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 13-12 lead at halftime.
In the second half Nederland scored first on a long pass play after a Mustang turnover but missed the PAT for a 19-12 lead.
The Mustangs had to battle for yards in the game. Quarterback Tyrone Wilson became the focus as the game went on. He scored on a keeper in the fourth to cut the lead to 19-18. The Mustangs elected to kick and it was wide right.
WOS brought in quarterback Pop Terrell to try and spark the offense and he moved the ball with a couple of nice pass plays. But a tipped pass was intercepted by the Bulldogs, spoiling a late comeback.
Wilson lead WOS with 61 yds. rushing. Kade Scott was the Dogs leadking rusher with 110 yds. on 21 carries.
WOS will travel to Little Cypress-Mauriceville Friday. All tickets for the WOS vs. LCM Varsity football game, Friday September 7th, have to be purchased at their gate the evening of the game. Ticket prices are Adults $5 and Students $3.
