It was the Montavien Hunt Show Friday night in Jasper. He rushed 23 times for 362 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs beat the West Orange-Stark Mustangs 34-24.
What was even more amazing (and unbelievable) than seeing that many yards against the WOS defense, was the fact that he had 284 of those yards on his four touchdown runs of 57, 80, 70, and 77. And all four TD’s came on the first play of the drive.
After kicking a field goal on the first drive, Hunt scored on the second drive and added two points to take an 11-0 lead. WOS then got on the scoreboard with a 36 yard field goal by Angel Ibarra before the end of the first quarter.
WOS moved downfield on their next drive to set up a shorter field goal try but a high snap disrupted the play and the kick was missed.
Hunt then ran 80 on the very next play and in a matter of seconds the game went from what could’ve been 11-6, to 18-3.
But WOS responded with a drive that included a 22 yard pass from Tyrone Wilson and 25 yards in penalties by Jasper’s defense to set up a six yard TD run by Kayvn Cooper. The kick was good and WOS was back in it only down by a score.
That was until the next play. Hunt…up the middle…70…touchdown. 25-10 Dogs.
WOS had a big play of their own before the half when Wilson found Brettlin Wiley wide open for an 82 yd. reception. Cooper punched it in from two yards on the next play. But when the Mustangs went for two, Wilson fumbled the ball and Jasper returned it 98 yards for a 2-point touchdown and a 27-16 halftime lead.
Just when it looked like the Mustangs were going to make a move, Jasper would find a way to take the momentum away. And it continued in the second half.
WOS opened the third quarter scoring with a 34 yd. TD run by Cooper and and two point conversion. It cut the lead to 27-24 and the Mustangs were in business.
Until the next play.
Hunt…up the middle…77…touchdown. 34-24 Dogs.
After the Mustangs were forced to punt on their next possession, the Bulldogs sealed the victory with a game of “keep away.” They went straight power-eye and ran the last 9:56 off the clock on a 16 play drive, taking a knee at the two when the game ended.
Jasper upped its record to 6-0 while the Mustangs fall to 2-4. Cooper, who had missed a couple of games nursing an injury, ran 18 times for 86 yards and three touchdowns.
WOS will open district Friday at home against Silsbee with free admission.
