The West Orange-Stark defense turned it up in the second half Friday night in their 36-14 win over Little Cypress-Mauriceville.
After a 90 yard kickoff return by LCM’s DJ Spears cut the Mustangs lead to 20-14 in the third quarter, WOS stopped the Bears in their tracks, holding them to just 40 yards of offense in the second half.
WOS opened the game by driving 60 yards in 12 plays and capped it with a four yd. plunge by Jamarcus Ross. Angel Ibarra added the PAT.
LCM responded after a Mustang turnover and tied the game at 7 when Ethan McCollum found Brandon Pollock for a seven yard TD.
WOS then put together an 11 play drive to regain the lead after running back Elijah Gales ran in from 18. It wouldn’t be his last time in the end zone.
In the third quarter the WOS defense forced LCM into a quick three and out and then a bad punt and a heads up return by Jacob Dominguez, the Mustangs would only need five plays to score. It was Gales taking it in from eight yards. Ibarra would miss the PAT.
WOS kicked off and that’s when Spears took it to the house to cut the lead to six.
But that’s as close as LCM would get. The WOS ground game lead by Gales, would score two more times and Ibarra added a 37 yard field goal in the victory.
Gales sat out most of the fourth quarter and finished with 235 yards and four TD’s on 23 carries. WOS finished with 441 yards of offense.
Now 2-0 WOS will go to Newton. LCM (1-1) will be home for a game against Jasper.
