
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales found most food service places in good shape when he visited 19 businesses during the first part of May. He cited the Kwik Stop Valero on South Main Street in Vidor with need for follow-up visits. However, the lowest score during the time was a 77 and went to Happy Donuts on South Main Street in Vidor.
Scales gave four perfect scores with three being child care centers. Fresh Prep on West Roundbunch Road in Bridge City earned 100, along with Easy Learning Child Care in Vidor, Little Pirate Learning Center in Vidor, and Loving Start Daycare in Vidor.
Scales gave a temporary permit with no score to Sweet Bee Boutique in Bridge City. He also had no score to make an ownership and name change from Kajun Seafood and Wings II to Bass Seafood, 1102 West Park Avenue in Orange.

Ten West Diner, 2650 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 98. The Vent-a-Hood, cutting boards and area around fryers needed to be cleaned. Air vents were dripping water. The area outside the back door needed to be cleaned.
Domino’s Pizza, 970 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Store had hot water problems at both hand-washing stations but was fixed. Employee food and drinks were stored improperly inside the cooler and on top of storage shelves. Inspector found an employee using cell phone and then boxing pizza without washing hands. Store needed to post current food service permit, health inspection report and certified food manager certificates in front.
Popey’s Chicken, 1604 West Link Avenue in Orange: 95. Both doors on the walk-in coolers were damaged and rusted. Employee cell phone and person items were stored on top of counter. Air vents, returns and ceiling were rusted. The outside back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Current food service permit, health inspection report and food manager certificates needed to be posted in the front. Inspector said restaurant needs to establish a cell phone policy.
Market Basket, 2005 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from sales floor. Several gnats were on onions inside the produce department. Floors and walls inside the meat, produce, and dairy coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized.
Market Basket Deli Department, 2005 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Sausage was stored above potatoes inside walk-in cooler. One employee was wearing improper jewelry. Wiping cloth was stored on prep table. Storage shelves, Vent-a-Hood and floors needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Empty boxes and rubbish needed to be discarded from deli department.
Speedy Stop Food Mart, 690 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Inside of cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned of old foods. Drinks were stored on the floor. Lights were needed inside the walk-in freezer. The back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized.
Stop N Drive, 1801 Dupont Drive in Orange: 94. Drink dispensers and slushie machines had heavy mold. Drings were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler. Paper towels were needed inside employee restroom. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.
MJ’s A Taste of Heaven, 1011 10th Street in Orange: 94. Mobil unit did not have hand sanitizer. Dates were needed on products. Employee was wearing improper jewelry.
Texas Country Store, 1805 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 92. Dates were needed on sandwiches inside the walk-in cooler. Store name and address were needed on all bags of ice being sold. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Lights were needed inside the walk-in cooler. Paper towels were needed inside the employee restroom. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.
Dollar General, 1390 North Main Street in Vidor: 91. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Foods inside the reach-in freezer had ice build-up, however manager pulled the products. Freezer had ice build-up and needed repairs. Paper towells were needed inside employee restroom. Floors and back stroage area needed to be cleaned of dirt and trash. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Surrent food service permit and health inspection report needed to be posted in front.
Church’s Chicken, 7409 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 88. Raw chicken was stored improperly inside the cooler and needed to be covered. No employees had food handler certificates. Heat strip on walk-in freezer was not working and the gasket on the warmer was damaged. Employee was sitting on prep table. Personal items were stored improperly on storage shelves. Floors throughout needed to be cleaned of old foods. Current food service permit, health inspection report and certified food manager certificates needed to be posted in front.
Kwik Stop Valero, 2210 South Main Street in Vidor: 80. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Shelves where clean dishes were stored had black mold and needed to be cleaned and sanitized. Store did not have a food handler permit. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dishes were in the hand-washing sink. Paint and chemicals were stored inside the deli. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Storage shelves inside deli needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors needed to be cleaned, especially inside deli and storage room. Paper towels were needed in the employee restroom. Current health inspection report was not posted in front. Inspector planned follow-up visit.
Happy Donuts, 495 South Main Street in Vidor: 77. Sausage, boudain and eggs were not at proper temperatures. “Shop did not keep a record of time on holding sausage, boudain and eggs out at room temperature. Personal foods were stored with public foods. Cappuccino machine and Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of old foods. Dates were needed on products. Hand-washing sink had items stored inside. Broken and unused equipment needed to be discarded. Store was using same pan line to back kolaches. Soap and paper towels were needed inside employee restroom.
