The weather and the Silsbee Tigers were too much for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs Friday. Silsbee advanced to the 4A D2 Semifinals with a 19-9 win against the Mustangs in Porter.
Gusty winds and heavy rain covered the stadium for four quarters while each team had trouble throwing, catching, and holding on to the football.
Silsbee scored on the first play of the game on a 75 yard pass play to make it 7-0. The Tigers then took advantage of a Mustang fumble to score and make it 13-0. On the PAT attempt the holder dropped the wet football and Justin Sibley picked it up and scored to make it 13-2.
The Tigers would take advantage of another turnover with a scoop and score by the defense to make it 19-2.
The Mustangs had a couple of long runs by freshman Elijah Gales to set up a one yard TD by Kavyn Cooper and cut the lead to 19-9 at the half.
WOS (9-5) started the second half by keeping the ball on the ground and put together a nice drive but failed to score. The rest of the half was spent giving the ball back and forth in the rain until the clock ran out.
Silsbee (10-4) will play the winner of Cuero and Navarro, who moved their game in San Antonio to Saturday. Congrats to the Mustangs on another fine season.
