The landscape of Lamar State College Orange continues to change. But this time instead of adding a building they’re taking one down.
Demolition started this week on the building at the corner of 4th and Front St. The building has held several names including as the academic and student center.
Lamar University opened its first extension center in Orange in the fall of 1969 in the former Tilley Elementary building.
But in 1971 fire destroyed the building and they needed a new location. So the community raised more than $250,000 for the purchase of the building at 410 Front St. that was formerly the Sabine Supply Company and a bowling alley.
Daniel McLemore, Director of Communications, said, “The legislative appropriations from the state for the new Academic Building included funding to demolish the old academic center. In its place will be a new parking lot and green space.”
McLemore added that all the contents of the building (old desks, chairs, cabinets, etc) that weren’t used elsewhere on campus were offered to other schools districts and non-profits.
