Orange County has been providing meals to citizens who are disabled or infirmed for many years through the Meals on Wheels program which delivers free meals to them five days a week. Their clients are vetted to confirm they meet eligibility requirements to receive the free food.
The Coronavirus pandemic has allowed that program now to be available to more citizens. Director Karen Stevens with Meals on Wheels said some of the restrictions have been lifted because of the difficulty for many seniors to get food because of the pandemic.
During the pandemic the meals will be delivered to any individual over the age of 60 years old by the senior calling Meals on Wheels at (409) 886-2186. “All they have to do is call us, and we will get them on a list,” Stevens encouraged.
Meals on Wheels’ drivers love their clients, and Stevens stated they take every precaution to ensure the people receiving the meals are safe. The drivers change their protective plastic gloves prior to every home they visit and always wear a mask during deliveries.
To Stevens’ knowledge none of her drivers have contracted COVID-19 and neither have any of the people who have received the meals. Stevens indicated the current service of delivery to seniors 60 years of age or older will last through the current pandemic.
