Kenneth Dawaine Mason, age 60 of Orange, is facing a charge of robbery in connection with a hold-up at Crawdad’s off Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on Saturday night.
The call about the robbery came at 7 p.m. The clerk managed to run outside and told officers the man inside had threatened to shoot someone, though she did not see a weapon.
Detective Captain Robert Enmon said police did not find a gun or weapon and recovered the money that had been taken.
Officers and vehicles from the Orange Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Department of Public Safety surrounded the store and tried to get the man inside to come out and surrender.
The man went to the south door of the store several times and started to leave, but would turn back. He finally bolted out the door running toward the intersection of the Interstate 10 access road and MLK Drive. An Orange officer hiding by a corner of the store chased the man and tackled him. Other officers came and handcuffed.
When the clerk went back inside the store, she told officers money was missing. Cash, including some bundled in rubber bands, was found inside the suspect’s pockets.
