
David Covey, the Orange County Republican Chairman, and John Baker (right), the Orange County Democratic Chair met at the County Elections division to look over their party’s ballot proofs for the upcoming March 6th Party Primary.
The meeting was friendly as both men commented that before they were members of a party they were friends and neighbors. John Baker remarked, “Local politics should be about pothole issues and what brings us together.”
David Covey agreed adding, “the people of the county need to be assured that both parties are working together and have the upmost confidence after HARVEY that the elections are running smoothly.” Both men praised the Elections Administrator, Tina Barrow.
Mail in ballots will be going out soon. Early voting begins on February 20th and the Primary is on March 6th.

Kenneth Luce of Vidor announced on Facebook Tuesday that he is dropping out of the March 6 Republican primary race for Orange County judge.
Luce wrote on Facebook he is “sad to announce that I have withdrawn from the race for Orange County Judge. I can not afford to continue to fund this race out of my pocket. I have a belief that if you don’t have it don’t spend it. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s support you have given me.”
However, his name will still be on the Republican ballot for the position with incumbent Brint Carlton and challenger Dean Crooks. The deadline has passed for people to remove their names from the ballots.

Larry Spears Jr. filed for mayor of Orange Wednesday during the first day of filing for the May 5 city council election. Spears serves as an at-large council member and is currently mayor pro tem.
He is employed by DuPont Sabine River Works as Safety, Health and Environment Coordinator.
Mayor Jimmy Sims could not be reached Wednesday to see if he will run, but his wife on Facebook has listed their house in Orange as being for sale.

Marla Zoch has decided she will not run for re-election on the Bridge City School Board. Zoch said, “At this point in my life I need to devote more time to my family commitments. I have been amazed at the support and generosity that people have shown me over the past 3 years. The advice and leadership from those more experienced than me was invaluable to my accomplishments and the support of family and friends has been incredible. “

Wednesday was the first day of filing for the May election. Filing will end at 5 p.m. Friday February 16.
