A man backing his boat down a ramp Tuesday morning turned a nice day on the water into prayers answered and a trip to the car lot.
The man was backing his airboat down a ramp in the Square Lake area off I-10 near American Airboats, and he forgot to put his pickup in park. Before he knew it, he was sinking quickly, being pulled down by the trailer.
Shannon Menard (right), who was fishing nearby, witnessed what happened and ran to the truck and jumped in the water. He said he was able to break the drivers side window and get the man out. “I couldn’t believe I saw it happen. And I did everything I could to get him out and bring him to shore,” Menard said.
It’s worth noting the the picture looks like he drove in truck first. But the current turned the vehicle around before Gilbeaux’s was able to pull it from the water.
The owner of the truck walked away saying he was on his way to buy another truck.
