
Mae Lajean “Jean” Grimes, 74, of Deweyville, Texas, Passed peacefully at her home, on February 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Dorman Funeral Home; Bro. John Fortenberry officiating. Visitation of family and friends will be held one hour prior to services, at Dorman Funeral Home.
Jean was born May 13, 1959, in Stewart, Mississippi, to Emmette Doyle Murphy and Lora Mae Upchurch Murphy. She worked many years in the cafeteria, at Deweyville Elementary, Kwik Pantry, and then cleaning supervisor, at Inland Orange. Jean’s grandkids were the highlight of her life. She enjoyed spending time with them, watching movies, playing card games (she would always let them win), and most of all, she enjoyed watching them play their favorite sports. Jean loved spending time in her garden; planting flowers every spring and watching them grow, with her grandkids. She was the best cook! Jean’s Cornbread Dressing and Cheese Logs were a family favorite. Jean was a fighter; she fought long and hard since she received her MDS diagnosis, in April, 2017. She was always ready for a visit and a hot cup of coffee. Jean loved her nieces and nephews as her own and had a special bond with each one.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bennie Grimes; brother, C.D. Murphy; sisters, Peggy Statum, Myrtie Yaw, and Jackie Ashworth; and ,Mother-in-Law and Father-In-Law, Alvin and Audrey Sue Bourque.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Audrey Says and husband, Chris, of Starks, Louisiana, Kayla Brown and husband, Chris, of Deweyville, Texas; grandchildren, Ashton Says and wife, Hannah, MacKenzie Says, Caleb Brown, and Logan Brown; brother, David Murphy and wife, Ramona; sisters, Martha Stanley and husband, Edgar, Phelonise Tynes and husband, Bobby; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Honoring Jean as Honorary Pallbearers are Lonnie Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Keaton Murphy, Connor Buxton, Bobby Tynes, Jason King, Greg Stanley, James Stanley, Keith Stanley, Ricky Ashworth, Olin Ashworth, Ronald Ashworth, Pete Johnson, and Greg Doyle.
The family would like thank Baptist Orange Infusion Center and Jean’s nurses, who became like family; Amy, Sarah, Nacona, and Laurie. Also, a thank you to Compassion Hospice, especially nurse Elaine, for the love, care, and compassion that was shown to our mom, and our family.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made, on behalf of Mae “Jean” Grimes, to the MDS Foundation.
