The Stark Museum of Art invites the public to Lunch & Look: Orange’s Best-Selling Author Janette Sebring Lowrey, presented by Curator Sarah Boehme. The free program will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from noon until 1 p.m. in the Walter G. Riedel III Education Center.
Janette Sebring Lowrey, born in Orange, Texas, is the author of the best-selling picture book of all time, “The Poky Little Puppy.” This beloved work, one of the original Little Golden Books, has delighted generations of readers, yet Sebring Lowrey’s name remains little known. In addition to her best-known work, she authored 15 other books for children and young adults, many of which feature narratives and illustrations by leading artists of the era.
During this slide talk, Boehme will explore Sebring Lowrey’s life, her literary contributions and the impact her Orange, Texas upbringing had on her writing. The presentation will include visual highlights from several of her books, showcasing the exceptional illustrations that contributed to their lasting appeal.
“Janette Sebring Lowrey may be one of the most-read authors you’ve never heard of,” said Sarah Boehme, curator at the Stark Museum of Art. “This Lunch & Look offers a chance to rediscover her story, her remarkable publishing legacy and the Orange roots that helped shape her work.”
Guests are welcome to bring their lunch and enjoy it during the program. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.
