The new official mascot for Lamar State College-Orange (LSC-O) will be the Gators. President Dr. Tom Johnson of LSC-O announced the winner on KOGT Monday morning.
The Gators won the runoff with the Mallards getting two-thirds of the votes from students, faculty, and administrators cast through last Friday. In the initial voting two weeks ago the Otters and the Hurricanes were eliminated as the possible school mascot.
The winning mascot of a Gator was submitted by Leslie Barber according to Johnson. “He’s a tough, fearsome prehistoric creature that has withstood the test of time. At LSC-O we’ve just reached a milestone of 50 years and striving for another 50. He’s a survivor of the world that has handled all that’s thrown at him through trials, tribulations, and storms. He represents the strength of our community and our campus. He’s the king of the bayou, and it don’t get much more prestigious than that,” Barber described the Gator in her submission.
Dr. Johnson said a name for the official Gator mascot of Lamar State College-Orange will be determined in the coming weeks as well. The Gator could be used as the mascot for a possible fishing team at Lamar State College-Orange in the near future.
