The Lamar State College Orange bass club fished their first tournament last weekend. It was a collegiate state qualifier on Lake Sam Rayburn.
The team of Jack Tindel and Brett Fregia finished 35th with a total of 11.22. One of their five fish unfortunately died before weigh-in and a one pound penalty cost them at least five spots.
It was also a tough start as one of their prop blades broke off on the way to their first spot.
“My dad brought me another prop so that took some time away from fishing,” Tindel said. But it didn’t mean they weren’t catching fish.
“We caught fish. Culled several times. We just couldn’t get any big fish in the boat,” said Tindel.
The Tindel-Fregia duo used a combination of crankbaits, carolina-rigged flukes, and a shaky head worm.
The LSCO team Dagan Leger-Kooper Abernathy was 36th with a total of 10.14. And Trace Moore fished by himself and was 47th out of 66 teams with 3.80 on two fish.
The winning team was from SFA. Robert Howard and Miles Lucas were the only team to catch more than 20 pounds, finishing 22.99 with a 7.07 kicker. The largest bass caught was 8.19.
LSCO plans on participating in the next collegiate tournament, Nov. 16 which will also be on Sam Rayburn.
