Cloeren Incorporated of Orange is planning an investment of $5.55 million and is asking the Orange City Council to nominate it as an Enterprise Zone to the office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism.
The Enterprise Zone designation qualifies the company to seek state economic development incentives. The application says the investment shows a commitment to keeping 209 jobs.
The Orange City Council will vote on the Cloeren Incorporated nomination during its next meeting. The meeting will be at 9 a.m. The city is still having only 10 members of the council and staff at the council chambers. Part of the council, along with other staff members, and the public will participate or listen through a phone.
Since March, the city had been conducting meetings through either an internet video system or through phone conference. After problems with the internet and the some of the audio, the city is now opting to go by phone call only.
The meeting can be accessed through 1-844-800-5000 with access code 477-267-330. The meeting will include a time for citizens to comment through the phone conference.
The council agenda includes setting the council election for November 3, the national Election Day. Usually, the city elections are in May, but this year’s election was postponed because of the covid pandemic.
The two positions open this year are Single-Member District 3, currently held by Terrie Salter, who does not have an opponent. Only people who live within the designated district may cast a ballot in the race.
The other open seat is At-Large Position 6. Incumbent Paul Burch is facing Charles Ray Thomas in the race.
The council will set early voting dates and polls. Early voting will start Tuesday, October 13, instead of Monday, October 19, because Governor Greg Abbott set the extra days to help accommodate voters.
