Week 1 saw the Orange Bowl go to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears Coach Randy Crouch is disappointed in the loss, but was pleased by the effort put forth by his Bears.
In Week 2 the opposition does not get any easier as LC-M plays the Class 5A Barbers Hill Eagles. Coach Crouch says the Eagles are very experienced on offense. Crouch points out Barbers Hill runs the Wishbone and has 10 seniors starting on offense. The Eagles are especially strong in the offensive line and at fullback. Crouch admits it’ll be a heck of a challenge for the Bears.
Barbers Hill is experienced on defense as well, and Crouch is impressed with the Eagles’ defensive front. Crouch says the Eagles line up in a 50 Defense with eight starters back from last season. The defensive line has played together for the last two or three years and really run to the football according to Crouch. LC-M will have to play really well in a lot of areas to stay with Barbers Hill.
Coach Crouch identifies positive signs for the Bears as they move forward into the second game of the season. Crouch observes the Bears did not commit a turnover in the Orange Bowl with the Mustangs, had very few penalties, and ran to the ball pretty good on defense. Crouch believes improvement is needed in tackling in space by the Bears. Coach Crouch saw a lot of bright spots including Beau Bickham in his quarterback play, the young offensive line started coming around, and the Bears tackled better as the game went along. As the season progresses, Crouch thinks LC-M needs to make the plays when they are there, and they just have to do that.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears welcome the Barbers Hill Eagles to Battlin’ Bear Stadium Friday night.
