The LC-M drum line gave the beat. The LC-M cheerleaders and bear mascot greeted children. Clifford the Big Red Dog even made a guest appearance. But the spotlight was on the books, more than 1,000 books about dogs, cats, dinosaurs, snakes, girls who run, and a wimpy kid.
The Little Cypress Elementary School Wednesday afternoon celebrated a donation of 1,090 Scholastic books to replace ones lost in the Harvey flood last year.
The donation came through Lifetouch photography’s Cover to Cover, Heart to Heart program. Lifetouch is the company that for decades has taken school pictures and published yearbooks.
The company worked with Scholastic Book Fairs and the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA) to present the books. School District Spokesperson Sherry Combs said Lifetouch employees bought Scholastic books online for donations. Scholastic Books then donated 50 percent of the amount of the Lifetouch donations in Scholastic Dollars to the school, which can then buy more.
The books are designated to be in individual classrooms. Teachers picked out age-appropriate ones for their students.
Mark Terry with the principals group said he toured schools in Southeast Texas after Harvey and saw how many books were lost.
“My daughter is a first grade teacher, so I knew that was a lot of money for a teacher to replace the books,” he said.
Scholastic Books, Lifetouch and TEPSA have given books to Little Cyress Elementary, Orangefield Elementary and the Fulton Learning Center.
The students at Little Cypress welcomed their benefactors and made a giant banner decorated with colorful handprints, and reading “LCE appreciates your support”
