An obstruction that has been snagging boats and possibly damaging boat propellers was removed from the Sabine River canal in Orange Thursday. Stan Floyd with American Airboats used his biggest model airboat, to tow the 99-foot long obstruction to his business near Interstate 10 on the east side of Orange. Gilbeaux’s Towing used its biggest wrecker to drag the triangle shaped wooden structure out of the water. Several cut marks on the wood gave evidence where propeller blades had struck the obstruction over time. Floyd said only a portion of it covered in moss and lily pads was visible above the surface of the water in the canal near Blue Bird Fish Camp. Guesses by Floyd and personnel with Gilbeaux’s were that the nearly 100-foot long structure may have been used as a slipway to launch ships or boats built in Orange.
