Debris from Harvey is being removed from yards and right of ways across Orange County. Ashbritt has been contracted with the county just like it was following previous storms to oversee the removal of the debris.
The projected deadline for debris removal is January 14, 2018, but there may be additional cleanup needed of debris that has blown away from piles or has fallen off trucks taking the debris to the landfill. Buddy Lofton with Ashbritt suggested inmates at the Orange County Jail can be used to help with the picking up of loose debris just as they did following Ike. Ashbritt would supply the bags to hold the debris, the jail would provide the inmates to pick up debris across the county, and guards to supervise the inmates. Lofton added that afterwards the county could pick up the bags from the side of the roads.
County Judge Brint Carlton agreed the job will not be complete until all the debris from the storm is removed in the county. The judge said Ashbritt is contracted to theoretically take the debris from Point A to Point B and any debris that falls out at Point C is still Ashbritt’s responsibility to clean up. Carlton concluded, “We’ll discuss that on how to do a final cleaning.”
Citizens may continue to use the Orange County landfill for disposing of storm debris free of charge through January 14. Landfill hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Mondays through Saturdays.
