The College Success Division at Lamar State College – Orange hosted the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) Region V Conference on Thursday, December 11, 2014. Over 200 students plus sponsors from across Region V participated. Their 2014 theme was “Teaching is Out of this World…It’s a twirled world that will leave you swirled”.
High school students wishing to become teachers participated in the daylong event held at the LSCO student center, Wilson Building and Green Avenue Buildings. The students participated in several contests some of which included creative lecture, exploring education administrative careers, impromptu speech, children’s literature, researching learning challenges, job interviews, classroom role play and delivery, public speaking, project visualize, service projects and ethical dilemma. Students also had breakout sessions where the guest speakers were from the Texas Department of Public Safety and talked about victim services; from Port Neches-Groves High School and talked about bullying and Kathy Bell Schexanider who represented MADD. The students also received Lamar State College – Orange campus tours.
The Teachers of Tomorrow (TOT) group on the LSCO campus also assisted with the conference. Their sponsor is Dorraine Babcock. Some of the schools that participated included Bridge City, Orangefield, West Brook, Port Neches-Groves, Taylor Career Center, Thomas Jefferson Middle, Ozen High School, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Hardin, Kirbyville and Silsbee.
