Last season had an unusual ending for the Bridge City Lady Cardinals. Coach JoLee Kolander got her girls into the playoffs, but then went into labor with her first child. Assistant Coach Lance Robertson stepped up to lead the Lady Cardinals. Bridge City won a play-in game with the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears and then won its Bi-District game before being eliminated by Houston Wheatley which went to the final four.
Robertson now is the head coach and has a whole of lot of experienced Lady Cardinals to work with this season as he has eight seniors returning. Defensive specialists are Rylee Oceguera and Caitlyn Dennison. Guards coming off the bench for the Lady Cardinals are Madison Day, Haley Potter, and Anaiah Hicks.
At post is the top scorer and the best three-point shooter Madison Fischer. Also helping out at post are Macie Murty and Hannah Wiegreffe.
There are not many holes to fill with so many seniors coming back, but Coach Robertson will find playing time for several new Lady Cardinals. Aspen Daniels is very quick and will see time at the post position. Kyndall Harrison plays point guard and also shooting guard for Robertson. The newcomer to Bridge City is freshman Reesie Ryder who is now starting at point guard.
As might be expected Bridge City is showing itself to be a strong team in the early going of this season according to Coach Robertson. The Lady Cardinals won seven of their first ten games and were playing great team ball.
A big win early came against East Chambers in overtime after Fischer hit a three-point basket at the buzzer to force the extra period. Robertson added, “She did have 17 that night, but if you go look at our scoring throughout the year there’s a different senior every night that’s stepping up to get double, doubles.”
Returning eight players from a bi-district winner has Coach Robertson feeling good about the Lady Cardinals this season. The team has adopted the saying this year of “Shock the South” as its motto with Bridge City hoping to continue the success started two years ago by making the playoffs with Coach Kolander and was matched under Robertson last season in the post season. “We want to try to get to the Regional Tournament this year,” Robertson concluded.
