Joseph Franklin Shannon, Jr. was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife Kay Charlotte Blacksher Shannon on Thursday, February 9, 2023.
Kay Charlotte Blacksher Shannon was born August 25, 1938 in Jasper, Texas and passed away January 12, 2021, at the age of 82 in Mauriceville, Texas.
Kay and her family moved to Mauriceville when she was a young girl. She met her future husband Joe when both were students attending grade school in Mauriceville. They married after graduation from Mauriceville High School. As a young woman Kay worked at Southwestern Bell before becoming a full-time mom to three boys. She later returned to work as a high school secretary and eventually retired from Little Cypress – Mauriceville CISD. Kay was a fantastic homemaker, amazing cook, and a dedicated and wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed collecting antique glass, porcelain dolls, and Holiday Barbies. She was also a long-time member of the Martha Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Mauriceville and loved participating in her Sunday School class activities, as well as volunteering at Summer Bible School.
Joseph Franklin Shannon, Jr. was born November 10, 1936 in Lake Charles, Louisiana and passed away February 9, 2023, at the age of 86 in Vidor, Texas. Joe and his family moved to Mauriceville, Texas when he was young. There, he met and married his wife of 62 years, Kay Charlotte Blacksher. Joe loved raising animals with his three boys and showing livestock each fall at the YMBL South Texas State Fair in Beaumont. He also enjoyed raising a garden and sharing his tomatoes with family and friends. Joe worked his entire career and retired from DuPont Sabine River Works in Orange, Texas. He was a strong and giving husband, father, and grandfather. Joe, too, was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Mauriceville.
Kay and Joe are survived by their children, Joseph Franklin Shannon, III and partner Angela, Timothy Allen Shannon and wife, Lorraine, George Leonard Shannon and wife, Reba; grandchildren, Trace Shannon, Chasity Clark, Misty Kirbow and husband, Joshua, and Tiffiny Clark; great grandchildren, Aubree Clark, Abbigale Boozer, and Parker Kirbow.
Kay is preceded in death by her father, Buford Cleo Blacksher, and her mother, Lois Lessie Bean Blacksher. Her brother Kev Cooper Blacksher Sr. passed away this summer.
Joe is preceded in death by Kay; his father, Joe Shannon Sr.; his mother, Rosemary; and his sister, Doralyn “Dolly” Pearcy. Joe is also survived by his sisters, Donna and husband Wendell “Buster” Snelson, and Jerry Ann and husband Don Hartsfield.
Both Kay and Joe are survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Kay and Joe will be held at First Baptist Church of Mauriceville, 11540 Highway 12, on Friday, February 24, 2023. Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m., with the memorial service to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Mauriceville, P.O.
