Jesse Earl Shepherd, 76, of Mauriceville, TX, passed away on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at his residence. Born in Newton, TX, Jesse grew up with a love for small-town values and carried that sense of community throughout his life. He spent his later years as a proud and beloved resident of Mauriceville.
Jesse served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his deep appreciation for discipline, camaraderie, and perseverance. After returning home, he built a remarkable 35-year career as a mechanic with Chevron/Phillips in Orange, TX, where his dedication and expertise earned him the respect and admiration of his coworkers and community.
While work was a significant part of his life, Jesse’s heart truly belonged to his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 20 years, Shirly Shepherd of Mauriceville. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his grandchildren, often found cheering them on at baseball games or sharing stories that reflected his kind, generous spirit.
Jesse is survived by his children, Hope Wendling and her husband Tommy of Hamshire, TX, and Mary Norris and her husband Bo of Livingston, TX. He leaves behind his brothers, Alfred Shepherd of Saratoga, TX, and Henry Shepherd of Nacogdoches, TX, as well as his sister, Mary Ray of Beaumont, TX. His legacy continues in his six cherished grandchildren: Thomas Wendling III, Kimberly Williams, Laura Wendling, Brooke Norris, Jacob Norris, and Reagan Norris, and three great-grandchildren: Raylynn Norris, Ryan Norris, and Scarlett Norris.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Irene Shepherd, and his precious “Little Piggy Tailed Girl,” Claudette Verdonia Shepherd, whose memory he held dear.
Jesse’s life was marked by kindness, love for his family, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys—whether tinkering with cars, watching baseball, or sharing a laugh with those he loved most. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
