
Schools and child care businesses did well in health inspections during the first two weeks of February. Orange County Health Inspector went to 21 schools or businesses dealing with food and gave nine perfect scores. The lowest score was a 78 to the Donut Palace on Highway 12 in Mauriceville. The store had demerits for sausage and boudain found at unsafe temperatures plus meat stored above raw donuts inside coolers.
The perfect scores went to Bridge City Intermediate, Mauriceville Middle School, West Orange-Stark Elementary, Little Cypress Elementary, Little Cypress Junior High, Little Cypress-Mauriceville High, and Kid’s Castle on Parkside Place in Bridge City. In addition, The Enchanted Cottage on MacArthur Drive made 100 on the inspection.
A pre-opening inspection with no score was made at Oza’s Diner, 1907-B MacArthur Drive.

Judice’s Cajun Cafe, 2045 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. The heating element on the inside of the reach-in freezer was broken. Several broken or damaged containers and dishes were found. The Vent-a-Hood and area around the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease. The inside of the ice machine had mold or slime.
Dollar Tree, 170 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 96. Soap was needed inside the restroom and paper towels were stored on top of the toilet. Inspector recommended a paper towel dispenser. Foods inside the walk-in cooler and freezer, along with storage room, needed to be stored six inches off the floor. The back storage room needed to be cleaned.
Smokers Express, 1050 16th Street in Orange: 95. Drink dispensers, the inside of the ice machine and the slushy machine needed to be cleaned of mold and slime. The floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of dirt. Several gnats were under the drink dispensers. Inspector recommended pest management to retreat.
Star Stop, 1104 Burton Avenue in Orange: 92. The ice scoop was on top of drinks inside of the storage room. Mold was on the slushy machine. Inside restroom sinks did not have hot water. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the storage room instead of six inches off the floor. Light shields were needed throughout the store. A bed was found inside the storage room and needed to be removed.
Dollar General, 2500 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Pinehurst: 92. Dented cans were throughout the store. The restrooms did not have hot water. Shelves inside the milk cooler and the shelves on the front sales floor needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors throughout the store needed to be cleaned of dirt. Ceiling tiles were missing. The employee restroom needed to be cleaned. Inspector recommended more cleaning and organizing.
McDonald’s, 1710 16th Street in Orange: 90. Dates were needed on products. Inspector found several broken dishes. An employee had ear buds. The Vent-a-Hoods and the area around the fryers needed to be cleaned of old foods. Also, storage racks and containers needed to be cleaned. Dispensers needed to be cleaned daily and slime was found on the outside. The floors, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods. Inspector recommended pulling all equipment away from the wall and cleaning more often. In addition, inspector said more general cleaning is required and he will have follow-up visits with the manager.
Stateline chevron, 2323 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 89. A gasket at the walk-in cooler door needed to be replaced. Drinks needed to be stored six inches off the floor inside the walk-in cooler and the storage room. Floors under shelves inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of trash. Light shields were needed throughout the store. Missing ceiling tiles needed to be replaced. Air filters were improperly stored. Soap was needed inside restrooms. Inspector reported that the store was recently sold.
Super Star Food Mart, 420 South Main Street in Vidor: 88. The inside of the cappuccino machined needed to be cleaned. The floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. The restrooms did not have hot water. Sandwiches inside the reach-in cooler did not have dates. Hot water was needed at all hand-washing stations. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler and the back storage area. Store had missing and damaged ceiling tiles. Rusted door on the ice machine needed to be replaced.
Noah’s Seafood Kitchen, 950 North Main Street in Vidor: 86. Chemicals not approved for food service were in the kitchen. Restroom sink needed hot water. Dates were needed on all products. Plastic grocery bags were used to store foods inside the cooler and freezer. The flat-top grill needed to be cleaned. An object the inspector could not identify was on top and needed to be removed. The Vent-a-Hood, storage racks and sides of fryers and the grill needed to be cleaned of old grease. Inspector found broken floor tiles and missing baseboards. More general cleaning was needed.
Ming’s Buffet, 840 North Main Street in Vidor: 80. Restaurant had improper food storage. Foods needed to be covered. Inspector found dirty dishes and the improper storage of air filters. Foods needed to be dated. Soap was needed at hand-washing sinks. Food was stored inside of plastic grocery bags. Fly strips were hanging from the ceiling. Employee drinks were found without lids and straws. Managers’ foods were with public foods. Shrimp were thawing inside a bucket of water. The Vent-a-Hoods, floors, equipment and shelves throughout the restaurant needed to be cleaned of old foods. Employee restroom needed to be cleaned. Walls needed to be repaired. Inspector recommended more cleaning.
Donut Palace, 11258 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 78. Sausage and boudain were at unsafe conditions. The restaurant had no policy on holding foods at room temperatures. Meat was stored above raw donuts inside the coolers. Plumbing under the sinks needed repair. No dates or thermometers were found. Soap was needed at the hand-washing sink. Foods were being stored in plastic grocery bags. Employee drinks without lids and straws were found. Pan liners for kolaches were being used more than once. The Vent-a-Hood, fryers and grill needed to be cleaned of old foods. Damaged ceiling tiles were found throughout. The inspector recommended more general cleaning.
