
On December 7 at 7:54 PM, the Orange County Jail Staff was conducting inmate checks when they discovered an inmate hanging inside his jail cell. Sheriff Bobby Smith said the jail staff immediately entered the cell, which was occupied only by the unresponsive inmate, and began performing life saving measures.
The jail staff continued to perform life saving measures until paramedics arrived. The inmate was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Beaumont. On Dec. 8, at 11:30 AM, the inmate passed away at the hospital in Beaumont. Jefferson County JP Ben Collins ordered an autopsy.
The Texas Rangers are conducting the custodial death investigation. Identification is being held until the next of kin are notified.
