Orange police are investigating the shooting death of a 24-year-old woman as a homicide and Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the woman’s 52-year-old husband, Robert Hand, is a suspect.
Police said Megan Smith died of a gunshot wound to the back after being taken by ambulance to a Beaumont hospital. The shooting was reported at 5:48 p.m. Hand told police it was an accident.
Smith was shot with a small caliber handgun in a bedroom of a house in the 1500 block of Main Avenue behind Sabine River Ford.
Captain Enmon said the couple’s children, ages 3 years and 2 years, were at home at the time, but he does not know if they were in the room. “We still have a lot of questions to ask,” he said. “At this time, there is no evidence of an argument or a disturbance. There’s no indication of any type of alcohol or drug abuse or intoxicant.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, police were continuing to collect evidence and talk to people. No charges have been filed.
