“Not everybody gets to practice on Thanksgiving,” said WOS Head Coach Hiawatha Hickman. “And we’re thankful to be one of those teams.” The Mustangs are having a walk through Thanksgiving morning before filling their bellies and watching the Cowboys. Coach Hickman said he’s definitely looking forward to his mommas dressing and pecan pie.
The Mustangs will play Sealy in the third round of the 4AD2 playoffs Friday night at 7pm at Randall Reed Stadium in New Caney.
Sealy comes in at 11-1 after finishing second behind Bellville in District 11. They’ve outscored their opponents by a whopping 555-130 and defeated Gatesville and Columbia in the playoffs by a combined score of 91-13.
“They have some athletes,” said Hickman. “We knew that after seeing them last year at the Regional Track Meet. But you know, we feel like our schedule has prepared us for anybody. LaVega, Newton and Crawford are all still in the playoffs and Episcopal is playing for a State Championship.”
The Mustangs defense stepped up last week against a Robinson team that came in with some gaudy numbers. WOS was down 14-7 at the half, made some adjustments, and then outscored the Rockets 28-7 in the second half.
The Tigers are lead by their QB Kane Killough, who’s committed to Air Force according to Hickman. He’s thrown for 1700 and rushed for 1000 yards.
Killough’s favorite receivers are numbers 1, 2. and 4. They also have five other runners who have had significant carries.
We asked coach if he’s able to enjoy the moment. Laughing he said, “We’ll enjoy it when the season is over. Winning is fun and the community has been great during this run. But we still have work to do and we look forward to the challenge on Friday.”
The winner will face either LaMarque or LaVega.
