Alice Henson spent three weeks in a hospital with Covid 19, but is now recovering at her son’s house.
“It is through prayer and her faith that she beat covid,” said her son, Caleb Henson, who is the choir director at West Orange-Stark High School.
Mrs. Alice Henson, is the site coordinator at Communities in Schools of Southeast Texas and is 64-years-old. Wednesday afternoon, her son spoke on the phone about their experiences because his mother is still weak, though she gets up now.
“She’s not 100 percent back to normal,” he said.”She’s still short of breath, especially when she’s talking and moving around.”
Caleb and his wife (below), who is a nurse, have quarantined themselves with Mrs. Henson during her recovery. They are thankful to be with her. For them, the hardest part of the hospitalization was not being able to see his mother.
Mrs. Henson is the mother of five, including three adoptions. Caleb said none of them could see her when she was in ICU. “We could not go up there. We couldn’t bring anything,” he said. They felt helpless.
She never had to be put on a ventilator to help her breathe, even though she developed pneumonia. Caleb said doctors told the family at one point they had prepared her for a ventilator because they thought she might need one.
“We were relieved they did not have to,” he said.
The ordeal for the Henson family started on March 18 when Alice started feeling poorly. The day was five days after the president and Texas governor declared disasters because of a pandemic.
Her son said the fever went high and they took her to an emergency care center. The physician thought she had strep throat and wrote a prescription. However, Mrs. Henson did not improve and continued to be sick.
After consulting with her personal physician in Groves, she was told to go to a hospital.
Caleb said a covid test was made, but they never learned the results. “By that time, we thought she had it,” he said. A second test was collected and it returned positive for the virus.
Mrs. Henson is a member of the Starlight Church of God in Christ. She credits her friends and church family with their prayers for getting her through the tough part of her illness.
Her son said she occasionally has a low-grade fever, but is recovering well.
