Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 31 restaurants and food businesses during the latter half of July and found most of the places up to par.
The lowest score was an 84 to the Stars Petro Plus, 1955 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Orange. The store had boiled eggs at unsafe temperatures and improperly stored raw chicken. Only a couple of stores had mold in the drink dispensers and some had a few gnats.
Two businesses had perfect scores of 100. They were the Orange First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and the Econolodge Inn and Suites on Texas Avenue in Bridge City.
Scales also made three pre-opening inspections with no scores for new businesses. They are Market Basket on Highway 62 North in Mauriceville, Quick Stop on Western Avenue in West Orange, and Christi’s Diner on FM 1131 in Vidor.

The Country Store, 6373 FM 1442 in Orangefield: 87. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Inside of cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned. Restroom did not have hot water. Foods inside coolers needed to be dated. Spider webs were throughout store. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Light shields were needed inside the walk-in cooler. Ice scoop was stored improperly next to the ice machine.
Kwik Stop Valero, 1555 16th Street in Orange: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold was inside the ice machine and on drink dispensers. Hot water did not reach the required temperature. Drinks were stored on the floor. Inside of cabinents, along with floors in the storage room and floors inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned. Cappuccino machine neded to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted in front.
Pakco, 3031 Highway 12 in Vidor: 89. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Chemicals were stored above paper goods. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler and storage area. Area outside back door needed to be cleaned of old equipment. Back door needed to be resealed. Current food service permit and health inspection report were not posted in front.
Honey Stop, 1012 West Park Avenue in Orange: 90. Inspector said the “store is in very poor condition-score does not reflect the condition of the store.” Inspector found expired drinks inside walk-in cooler. Employee restroom did not have hot water. Gasket on walk-in cooler needed to be replaced. Drinks were stored on the floor. Ceiling tiles were missing or damaged. Back storage room needed to be clenaed and organized. Employee restroom needed paper towels.
Schnitzel, 950 South Main Street in Vidor: 91. Restaurant did not have sanitizer. No certified food manager was on staff. Handwashing station had dishes inside the sink. Vent-a-Hood are and outsidee of equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods. Current food service permit, food manager certificates, and current health inspection report were not posted in front.
Southern Charm Restaurant, 1627 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 93.
Comfort Inn, 2321 Highway 62 in Orange: 91. Did not have sanitizer. Handwashing station did not have cold water, only water at 126.2 degrees. Handwashing station was blocked off when inspector arrived. Dates were needed on products inside coolers.
Zapco Food Mart, 18548 Highway 62 South in Orange: 92. Raw chicked was stored improperly above othre foods inside walk-in cooler. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Handwashing signs were needed at the handwashing station.
Tuffy’s Eatery, 11261 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 92. Foods were cooling on top of the prep table. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers. Several gnats were found. Vent-a-Hood area, storage shelves and floors needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.
Dollar General, 3024 North 16th Street in Orange: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Spider webs were found throughout store. Storage shelves and floors in back storage room needed to be cleaned of old dust and dirt build-up. Employee restroom needed soap. Current food service permit and current health inspection report were not posted in front. Ceiling tiles were missing or damaged.
Danny’s Super Foods Deli, 2003 Western Avenue in West Orange: 92. Chemicals were stored improperly on back storage shelves. Lots of fly traps were hanging from ceiling in back storage room. Goods were defrosting inside bucket of water. Vent-a-Hood area, storage shelves and equipment, along with floors and walls throughout deli needed to be cleaned. Area around air vents and returns needed to be cleaned of old grease and dust buildup.
Danny’s Super Foods, 2003 Western Avenue in West Orange: 94. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Inspector pulled several expired date foods inside reach-in freezer. Flighes were throughout store. Ceiling tiles were damaged.
Best Western Orange Inn, 2245 Highway 62 in Ornage: 93. Sausage was not at proper temperature. Hotel did not have food handler certificates or certified food manager certificates on any employees.
Las Regio Mexican Food, 184440 Highway 62 South in Orange: 93. Restaurant did not have enough hot water to keep up with the demand. Handwashing station needed paper towels. Floor tiles were damaged. Current health inspection report was not posted in front. Employees needed closed-toe shoes and shirts with sleeves.
Southern Charm Restaurant, 1627 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 93. Food inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Outside of all equipment, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Vidor Superette, 5645 North Main Street in Vidor: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Dates were needed on all products inside coolers. Drings were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler. Lights were needed inside storage room.
Veteran’s Grocery, 1900 DuPont Drive in Orange: 94. Store did not have plumbing, hot water, nor handwashing station inside.
Subway, 2809 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 94. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Employees needed hair restraints. Handwashing station needed paper towels.
McDonalds, 755 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. Ice scoop was on top of machine. Drink dispensers had slaight mold. Employee drinks were stored improperly on storage shelves. INside of reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned.
Sonic Drive In, 1265 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 95. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered. Employee had on improper jewelry (nose rings). Area around Vent-a-Hood and flat-top grill needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.
Sonic Drive In, 340 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Water was sitting on the bottom shelf of the reach-in cooler. Vent-a-Hood area, inside of coolers, floors, and air vents throughout needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.
Fastbreak, 695 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Inspector found expired food products. Several gnats were inside employee restroom. Co2 tanks needed to be secured.
CVS Pharmacy, 1295 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Back door needed to be resealed.
LaQuinta Inn and Suites, 108 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 98. Reach-in cooler was not keeping proper temperatures.
Pizza Hut, 1720 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 98. Vents at Vent-a-Hood near ovens, along with storage shelves and floors in the back storage area needed to be cleaned of old foods. Air returns needed to be cleaned of dust.
Cakes Plus, 7677 Lamurel Willey Road in Mauriceville: 99. Employee drinks were stored improperly. Floors and air returns needed to be cleaned.
